So you’ve done something you weren’t supposed to, didn’t you? Sought out knowledge you weren’t ready for, or defied the warnings of a curse? Or maybe you had the misfortune of cataloguing a cursed book with the wrong element.
And now your very soul is trapped.
That’s the Book of Hours experience! Don’t worry, your element of soul is not lost and can be recovered fairly easily, depending on how far into the game you are. Here’s how.
What is a malady

A Malady is a sickness of the soul. Your Element of Soul cannot be used for most things until recovered.
Maladies have a few requirements to clear them, but most important is the Aspect. Check the description for each one to see what it is. Here are the ones I’ve encountered so far:
Element of Soul | Malady | Aspect |
---|---|---|
Chor | Duendratic | Moth |
Ereb | Westengryred | Forge |
Fet | Gisting | Grail |

Mettle | ||
Phost | ||
Shapt | Acusis | Winter |

How to cure maladies

You need three things:
- A bed.
- A drink. Any drink.
- Aspect. Every malady has an aspect cost to cure. Just like unlocking rooms or reading books, you need to exceed that cost.
Once you have the requirements above, simply add your malady, drink and skills to the bed, and wait it out. Relief will come.
A bed
There are multiple beds throughout Hush House you can occupy. I highly recommend moving to one where the aspect matches your malady, at least temporarily. It’s not necessary, but makes things so much easier.
To move beds:
- Use any soul element on your current bed to “decamp” and tidy up.
- Find a new bed with Aspect that matches your malady.
- Use the appropriate Element of Soul card to claim it
A drink

Any drink Literally anything with a “beverage” tag, although I recommend finding one that gives the same aspect as the malady for obvious reasons.
There are plenty of drinks throughout Hush House if you’ve been diligent in unlocking rooms, and you can craft them at benches. The easiest drink to use is the pitcher of water you can get from the well, if you’ve unlocked it.
Just remember to pour out bottled drinks at a serving station (there’s one in the kitchens, and the keeper’s lodge). You might be sick, but drinking an entire bottle of wine in a day is not a good look.
Aspect
Just like every other process, you will need to match the Aspect requirements of your malady. And if you’re still early in the game, this is where you might struggle.
If you have used the highest-level matching skill you have, soul and drink and still don’t have enough, you may need to wait for the right weather to come along.
Keep in mind that you can create memories by re-reading books you’ve already read.
Good luck out there, Librarian.
